The Larvae are the carriers of the infection, latching onto human hosts and infecting them, turning them into Biophages.
These Larvae were the same shoulder-hugging annoyances that hide in lockers or chests throughout the game. After its death, it was noticed the creature was full of Larvae. Out of defense, the miners were able to fight back and kill the alien before the UJC arrived to assist with the situation. It is explained through recordings that the miners of Callisto dug deep enough and awoke this creature, causing it to attack the miners. On the other side of the research facility is a giant multi-eyed dead alien life form. A brief exploration of this lab reveals the UJC knew about the infection and was studying it. Upon heading deeper into the mines, Jacob and Dani come across a research lab that wasn't in the memories of the miners that Dani saw. It is revealed the UJC eventually came through and wiped out the entire colony, supposedly because of an initial spread of the infection.
