It is explained through recordings that the miners of Callisto dug deep enough and awoke this creature, causing it to attack the miners. On the other side of the research facility is a giant multi-eyed dead alien life form. A brief exploration of this lab reveals the UJC knew about the infection and was studying it. Upon heading deeper into the mines, Jacob and Dani come across a research lab that wasn't in the memories of the miners that Dani saw. It is revealed the UJC eventually came through and wiped out the entire colony, supposedly because of an initial spread of the infection.
